A fresh coat of paint can transform a room, but it cannot hide damaged walls. In fact, new paint often makes flaws easier to see. Before you paint, it pays to look closely at your walls and ceilings. Here are six signs you need drywall repair before painting, and what each one usually means.
1. Holes and Dents
Doorknob holes, anchor holes and dents from furniture are the most common drywall damage. Small holes can be patched and smoothed, while larger ones need a backed patch so the repair stays solid.
2. Cracks in Walls or Ceilings
Hairline cracks near doors, windows and corners are common as houses settle and move with the seasons. They should be opened up, taped or filled, and feathered smooth before painting, or they tend to reappear through the new paint.
3. Nail and Screw Pops
Small round bumps or popped heads in a line usually mean fasteners have backed out. They need to be reset and covered, or the bumps will show under fresh paint.
4. Peeling or Bubbling Tape
When the tape over a drywall seam starts to lift, bubble or peel, the joint needs to be cut back and re-taped. Painting over loose tape only hides the problem for a short time.
5. Water Stains or Soft Spots
Brown rings, soft spots or crumbling drywall point to moisture. Fix the source of the leak first. Once the area is dry, damaged drywall should be cut out and replaced rather than painted over. If you see signs of mold, the EPA has a helpful guide to mold and moisture.
6. Sagging Ceilings
A ceiling that sags between joists can mean water damage or failing fasteners. Sagging should always be repaired before any painting.
Why Repair Comes Before Paint
Paint is only as smooth as the surface underneath it. Repairing, sanding, texturing and priming damaged areas first helps the new finish look even from wall to wall. Because we are painters, our drywall repair work is always finished with the paint in mind, so the repair disappears.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you paint over damaged drywall?
You can, but the damage will usually show through. Holes, cracks and dents need to be repaired, sanded and primed first, or the new paint will highlight them instead of hiding them.
What causes drywall cracks?
Common causes include normal settling, seasonal movement, moisture and taped seams that were not finished well. Cracks that keep coming back or grow quickly are worth having looked at.
Is water-stained drywall safe to paint over?
Only after the leak has been fixed and the drywall is completely dry and solid. Soft, sagging or crumbling drywall should be cut out and replaced. If you see signs of mold, deal with it before any repair or paint work.
Do you paint the wall after repairing drywall?
Yes. At Chuck’s Pro Painting, every drywall repair is finished with primer and paint so it blends in with the surrounding wall or ceiling.
